DEZMOND ROGERS TO GIVE DOUBLE BASS RECITAL
First Presbyterian Department of Music and Arts
April 11, 2021, VERO BEACH – Dezmond Rogers, IRCHS Alumni and graduate of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, will present a Double Bass recital on Sunday, May 30, 2021 at 3:00pm. The concert, featuring accompaniment by Dr. Jacob Craig, will take place in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Boulevard in Vero Beach. Admission is free; a $10 donation is suggested.
Dezmond Rogers has been a musician for as long as he can remember, and he fell in love with the Double Bass when he was twelve. He spent his time playing music with his family and multiple contemporary bands at Indian River Charter High School under the instruction of Lenore Peloso, David Mundy, David Heroux, and Dr. Ray Adams. In addition to the staff of Indian River Charter High School, Dezmond attributes much of his love and skill in music to his mother, Joy Keplar. A self-taught classical bassist, he made his way up to becoming a member of the Florida All-State Orchestra for several years. He then met Dr. Brian Powell in early 2016, who took Rogers under his wing to help him prepare for college auditions. He won a scholarship from the Vero Beach Chorale Society, and received a full scholarship to the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. He is set to graduate in May of 2021 with a Bachelor’s degree in Double Bass Performance. Rogers has attended festivals throughout Florida and, in 2019, he toured with the Cuban American Youth Orchestra. In addition to classical Double Bass, Dezmond loves and plays all types of music and has a fascination with instrument repair and building. He is also a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia – the world’s oldest and largest secret national fraternal society in music- and has spent time as music director of the Beta Tau Chapter at UM.
Accompaniment for this recital will be provided by Dr. Jacob Craig. Dr. Craig is the Director of Music and Arts at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach. He received his Bachelor of Music Education and Piano Performance degree from Shorter University in Rome, GA before moving on to Tallahassee, FL to receive his M.M. in Choral Conducting and Literature under Dr. Andre Thomas at Florida State University. As of 2019, Jacob completed his Doctorate of Sacred Music in Performance at the Graduate Theological Foundation and Oxford University. He serves as Director of the ACTS Choristers at Indian River Estates, Sea Oaks Chorus, and Silver Tones community choir. Jacob is also a competitive Highland Bagpiper.
