Robert S. Pierpont, 87, Vero Beach

March 8, 1934 – March 19, 2021

Robert S. Pierpont, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 19th, 2021 at his home in Vero Beach, Florida. Robert battled Alzheimer’s disease for several years and was surrounded by his wife Greta Pierpont, family and caregiver in his final journey.

Bob was born in New Haven, Connecticut on March 8th, 1934. He was the son of Shepard Pierpont and Anna Gottstein Pierpont. He was raised in New Haven along with his brother Richard Pierpont and sisters, Dorothy Fortier and Betty Ritter. He later moved to Branford, Connecticut.

Bob was a go getter, salesman and entrepreneur and this led him to establish restaurant businesses in the 1960’s and 1970’s in Connecticut and Florida. He had a knack for finding a bar or restaurant that was run down.  He would buy the business, renovate and make it successful. These included many different varieties of restaurants and bars.  The restaurant he was most proud of was The Pub in New Haven, Ct., near Yale University and the Yale Repertoire Theatre.  The Pub was frequented by different celebrities including Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Henry Winkler and Liza Minelli.  The Nautical Junkyard in Davie, Florida and Sybil Creek Restaurant & Bar in Branford, Connecticut were the last restaurants he owned.

Bob loved to explore, and he traveled to many different places around the country and abroad. On one of his trips to Puerto Rico in 1969, he was on a plane that was hijacked to Cuba.  He loved to tell stories about that event and other trips where he seemed to always have interesting adventures.

Bob enjoyed entertaining others and was always a gracious host and served world class meals honed to perfection that he mastered from his restaurant days.  Bob loved live theatre and listening to music, he particularly liked country music and two of his favorite singers were Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. He enjoyed all sports, baseball and horse racing being his 2 favorite events. He went to World Series games, Super Bowls, The Triple Crown and Breeder’s Cup. He enjoyed telling the story of seeing Secretariat live, win the Triple Crown.

Bob was also fond of animals and especially loved his dog Zorro who provided so much comfort to him for many years and like a good soldier hardly ever left his side.

Bob is survived by his wife Greta Pierpont and their daughter Eve Pierpont.  His two sons, Russell Pierpont and Michael Pierpont from his marriage to Diana Signorelli.   His two daughters, Dianne Pierpont and Lynn Mahon, from his first wife Rose.  Seven grandchildren, Garrett Pierpont, Cora Mahon, Wesley Mahon, Nicholas Pierpont, Robert Pierpont, Michael Pierpont and Nicole Pierpont.  One great grandson, Ethan Pierpont.

The family will not be holding any calling hours. A burial service will be held at 4pm on Tuesday, April 6th at Crestlawn Cemetery in Vero Beach, Florida.
