FELLSMERE — Deputies are searching for a suspect who they said shot a 27-year-old man in the abdomen Monday at Sonrise Villas apartment complex.

Fellsmere police initially investigated the shooting that happened at 10:41 p.m. at 53 Sonrise Place, located north of County Road 512. Indian River County deputies are now leading the investigation.

Two officers were already in the area assisting a deputy in a traffic stop Monday when they heard what sounded like a gunshot or fireworks just prior to being dispatched, authorities said. The officers went to the shooting site near the front of building 60 in the complex.

Police found an unidentified man with one gunshot wound. The man was taken by ambulance to Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne with traumatic injuries, officials said.

An update on his condition was not available.

A sheriff’s K-9 and crime scene unit were also called to the scene to comb for evidence, authorities said. Those with information on the shooting can contact Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-TIPS or tcwatch.org.
