Gifford Cultural Center Resolution to be adopted by IRC Commission

Indian River County Commissioners Consider Resolution in Support of Gifford Community Cultural and Resource Center to honor the legacy of both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the contributions of the Gifford Community to the rich fabric of life in Indian River County

On the agenda March 16th Indian River County Board of Commissioners agenda is a RESOLUTION in support of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Historic Museum and Cultural Center, located in Gifford Florida.

If adopted, the RESOLUTION affirms the County’s support for the Gifford Community Cultural and Resource Center to honor the legacy of both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the contributions of the Gifford Community to the rich fabric of life in Indian River County through the construction of a Cultural Center which may include a library, studios, galleries, community meeting rooms, and enhanced museum facility while preserving the historic church, grave markers, trail, and other existing amenities at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

Furthermore, the RESOLUTION affirms that Indian River County is eager to coordinate with the Gifford Community Cultural and Resource Center and the Gifford Community to develop the Center and offers its pledge of commitment to the Gifford Community Culture and Resource Center and its supporters.

The RESOLUTION states that Indian River County will work in earnest with the Center to identify appropriate locations for the facilities within Martin Luther King Jr. Park and is committed to leasing a mutually identified portion of the Park for this purpose.

The adoption of this RESOLUTION will herald a major step forward toward the establishment of a facility for the Gifford Community Cultural and Resource Center. With its adoption, planning will begin in earnest, including establishing terms for the leasing of the land, the hosting of a community engagement meeting to assess the specific needs and ideas of the Gifford community and the larger Indian River County community, and the formulation of a fundraising goal to make the Center a reality.

According to Jonnie Mae Perry, CEO of the Gifford Historical Museum and Cultural Center located in the historic Macedonia Church, “the center will honor Gifford’s past while shaping our future for generations to come.”
