COVID-19 cases declined in Indian River County’s public schools for the second straight week as the spread of the virus slowed in the community.

A total of 22 students tested positive for COVID-19 between Feb. 8 and Feb. 14, School District records show.

That’s a 12 percent decline from the previous week when 25 students were diagnosed with the virus.

The high for students testing positive for COVID-19 was 30 during the last week in January, district records show.

Nevertheless, it was a tough week at Storm Grove Middle School where 7 students and one staff member tested positive for COVID-19.  Another 36 students were directed to quarantine.

Sebastian River High School has seen a jump in cases in February as 10 students and a staff member have been diagnosed with the virus and 74 students directed to quarantine.

A total of 204 students and 52 staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 in 21 public schools since the new school year started on Aug. 24, district records show.

That resulted in the quarantining of 1,834 students and 37 staff members who had come in close contact with the carriers.

The School District’s COVID-19 reporting system only provides numbers for students and staff members going to school in person at public schools.

The Florida Department of Health’s system tracks those involved in virtual learning programs, as well as those attending in person, in public, charter and private schools.

A total of 642 students, 48 staff members and 103 unknown people in 35 schools in Indian River County have tested positive for COVID-19 this school year, Health Department records show.
