BREVARD COUNTY — A 32-year-old Melbourne man was killed after his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck early Tuesday, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

The motorcyclist – who was not wearing a helmet – was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. The pickup driver, a 51-year-old Vero Beach man, was not hurt.

Highway troopers are no longer releasing the names of crash victims because of privacy reasons.

The wreck happened about 1 a.m. at U.S. 1 and 1st Street, east of Old Dixie Highway, in Grant-Valkaria, highway troopers said. The motorcyclist was traveling north in the left lane on U.S. 1, while the pickup driver was traveling southbound in the left lane on U.S. 1.

For an unknown reason, the motorcyclist lost control of the vehicle, veered to the left across the grass median and went into the southbound lanes, troopers said. The pickup driver swerved, but was unable to avoid hitting the motorcyclist.

The pickup struck the motorcycle and ran over its driver, troopers said. The fatal crash remains under investigation.
