COVID-19 vaccine angst shows signs of easing

About 3,000 Indian River County residents have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in the past week, bringing the total number receiving at least one shot to 22,908– about 14.5 percent of the population, county administrator Jason Brown told commissioners Tuesday.

Brown said 1,150 appointments are going out Tuesday to the more than 9,300 local residents aged 65 and older who are registered on the county’s Everbridge wait list system. He said about 2,150 are scheduled to receive either first or second doses of the vaccine this week. Brown pledged to improve the county’s public messaging system to update residents on how the waitlist line is moving and where they are in line.

Said county commission chairman Joseph Flescher:  “It is getting better, refreshing to hear some positive. It’s been a high anxiety ride. I want to thank the public for their patience. We’re getting closer.”
