FORT PIERCE — A 37-year-old Vero Beach man was killed after being struck by a car while walking on Edwards Road in St. Lucie County, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The man was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, where doctors pronounced him dead, highway troopers said. Troopers are no longer releasing the names of crash victims because of privacy reasons.

A family of three – including the driver and two passengers – traveling in the 2003 silver Toyota Camry were not hurt, troopers said. Troopers said the driver was a 36-year-old man, one of the passengers was a 31-year-old woman, and the remaining passenger was a 3-year-old boy, all of Fort Pierce.

The crash happened about 6:50 a.m. Monday at Edwards Road at Fivemile Creek, west of South 25th Street. Troopers said the Toyota was traveling westbound while the Vero Beach man was walking in the westbound lane.

The right front of the Toyota struck the man, troopers said. The vehicle’s driver then swerved to the left, crossed the center line and ran off the roadway.

Troopers said the Toyota then struck a utility pole and crashed into a ditch. The fatal crash remains under investigation.
