Deputies arrested Simmons, of St. Cloud, on charges of battery on an officer, loitering or prowling and resisting arrest without violence. Simmons was held Thursday at the Indian River County Jail on $13,500 bond.

Indian River County deputies responded to reports of a suspicious person about 2:30 a.m. in the 1900 block of 47th Avenue. Deputies spotted Simmons – covered in lawn debris – banging on the front door of a home.

The residents told authorities they did not know Simmons or why he was at their home, reports show. The occupants in the home said Simmons used so much force that they thought the door was going to break.

Deputies placed handcuffs on Simmons without issue.

Deputies walked Simmons to the patrol car when they noticed a holster-like object in his front pants’ pocket. When deputies tried to remove the object, Simmons pulled away and attempted to headbutt one of the officers, reports show.

Deputies wrestled Simmons to the ground, where he continued bucking and contorting, officials said. At one point, Simmons bit down on the left hand of one of the deputies and refused to let go, reports show.

Deputies eventually placed Simmons in hobble restraints and put him in the patrol car.

Simmons admitted to deputies he went to the home earlier, but could not give an explanation why he was there. Deputies noted Simmons had on a thick pair of gloves, and he could not explain why he was wearing them.

Simmons was booked in to the county jail. Simmons has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. March 26, court records show.
