2 hurt in head-on crash in south county

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A Fort Pierce man and a Vero Beach woman were hurt in a head-on, two-vehicle crash early Friday in south county, fire rescue crews said.

The wreck involving a gray Hyundai and a black Mazda happened about 9 a.m. at the 43rd Avenue Southwest and Oslo Road intersection, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Roger Dion said. The crash was not far from Publix Super Market at South Point.

Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Yanko Reyes said the woman is 71 years old, and the man is 89 years old. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

The woman, who was driving the Mazda, was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce with substantial, non-life threatening injuries, authorities said. The man, the driver of the Hyundai, was taken to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Highway troopers continue to investigate the crash.
