INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The skeletal remains of a woman found Wednesday morning near the interstate could be connected to an active murder investigation in Okaloosa County, officials said.

Indian River County deputies found the woman’s body near Interstate 95 and County Road 512 near Fellsmere, Sheriff-Elect Eric Flowers said in a video posted to the agency’s Facebook page late Wednesday. The woman’s name, age and town where she lived were not released.

Indian River deputies did not detail how long the body may have been in the isolated spot.

Okaloosa County sheriff’s officials contacted Indian River County deputies Wednesday morning in regards to the murder investigation. Okaloosa officials said they believed a woman’s body had been dumped in Indian River County, Flowers said.

It was unclear if Okaloosa officials told Indian River deputies an exact area of where they thought the body could be.

Indian River deputies found the woman’s remains in a grassy area near the interstate, Flowers said. A video posted to the agency’s Facebook page showed a crime scene van, yellow tape and deputies canvassing the area for evidence.

Indian River deputies are continuing to work with Okaloosa deputies on the investigation. Deputies will release more information to the public as it becomes available, Flowers said.

No further details were available.
