Youth Sailing Foundation hosts Veterans Day Regatta

Youth Sailing Foundation (YSF) hosted The YSF 2020 Veterans Day Regatta on Sunday, Nov. 15. It was Race #3 of the Florida East Coast Fall 2020 Series. Sixty sailors participated sailing, a total of 41 sailboats on four classes. Over one hundred family and friends watched the regatta from ashore and out on the Lagoon in coach boats.

Despite a constant moderate rain with light and shifting winds, the elementary school age sailors sailing in two Opti classes completed six races as did the Open Skiff class. The high school sailors in the 420’s, sailed a longer course and completed five races. With the wind out of the north earlier in the afternoon courses were set east of the Intracoastal Waterway with the windward mark just south of the 17th Street Bridge. A 140-degree wind shift later in the afternoon had the 5-10 knot breeze out of the southeast with courses completely reset to provide a windward start.

Skipper Mylee Smith with crew Lynden Bartholomew of YSF took over-all line honors to win the highly competitive 420 class. YSF sailors Rayne Herold and Peter Swanson took second and third place respectively in the advanced Opti Gold fleet. Rounding out YSF’s podium appearances was Alexander Delamarter taking a third in the Opti Silver class.
