Woman struck, killed by train; FEC investigating

VERO BEACH — An unidentified, middle-aged woman was killed after being struck by a train early Thursday, first responders said.

Indian River County Fire Rescue and Vero Beach police responded to the incident about 5:30 a.m. at the railroad tracks near 21st Street and U.S. 1. The train was traveling southbound at the time of the deadly wreck, police spokesman Master Officer Darrell Rivers said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said. It was unclear how fast the train was moving.

Law enforcement closed all intersections from Aviation Boulevard to 16th Street. Florida East Coast Railway officials removed the train from the area, Rivers said.

All roadways were reopened by 9:15 a.m., Rivers said. FEC police will investigate the cause of the crash.

No further details were immediately available.

DNA on hat leads to arrest in car theft involving child

VERO BEACH — Forensic detectives collected sweat from inside a hat left at the scene of a September car theft, leading police to file charges against the suspect. The DNA positively matched Tevin Devonte Wallace, who police said stole the vehicle with a 10-month-old baby inside. "We sent the hat to the (Indian River) crime lab and the lab was able to retrieve sweat from the hat," said Kelsea Callahan, spokesperson for the Vero Beach Police Department. Man charged in stabbing woman, requiring surgery

VERO BEACH — A 34-year-old man was jailed after a beating and stabbing that left a woman with severe injuries requiring surgery earlier this week, officers said. Police reviewed surveillance footage and described the incident as a vicious, unprovoked attack. "After speaking with medical staff, it was reported that (the victim) received treatment for four lacerations to the lower intestines, two lacerations to the colon and the removal of her spleen," Vero Beach police said in a report.
