Elementary student tests positive for virus; others to quarantine

Beachland Elementary School reported its first COVID-19 case Sunday, leading officials to place 16 students and two staff members on quarantine.

There are now 27 incidents involving virus cases reported at traditional schools in Indian River County. There have been 28 incidents reported overall at local campuses.

To date, 464 students and 18 staff members have been placed on two-week quarantines since the start of the school year.

In the latest case, Florida Department of Health conducted contact tracing at Beachland Elementary School after a student tested positive, according to the School District of Indian River County. Health officials identified 15 other students and two staff members that had close contact with the pupil.

School officials contacted the families of the students and told them the youth would need to stay home and monitor their symptoms, authorities said. The staff members, along with the student with a positive test, were also instructed to self-quarantine.

All Beachland Elementary School families and staff members were notified of the incident. The students will continue school through virtual learning.

Custodial services continue to disinfect and sanitize all areas of the campus to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
