SRHS student tests positive for virus; others to quarantine

Sebastian River High School reported its third case of a student testing positive for COVID-19, prompting officials to place 26  students and a staff member on quarantine Tuesday.

There are now 22 incidents involving virus cases reported at traditional schools in Indian River County. There have been 23 incidents reported overall at local campuses.

To date, 386 students and 13 staff members have been placed on two-week quarantines since the start of the school year.

In the latest case, Florida Department of Health conducted contact tracing at Sebastian River High School, according to the School District of Indian River County. Health officials identified 26 students and a staff member who had close contact with the pupil with a positive test.

School officials called the families of the students and told them the youth would need to stay home and monitor their symptoms. The staff member, and student with a positive test, were also instructed to self-quarantine, school officials said.

The students will continue school through virtual learning, authorities said.

All Sebastian River High School families and staff members were notified of the incident. Custodial services continue to disinfect and sanitize all areas of the campus to prevent the spread of COVID-19, officials said.
