VBHS student tests positive for virus; 36 to quarantine

A Vero Beach High School student tested positive for COVID-19, prompting school officials to place 35 other students on a two-week quarantine Tuesday, authorities said.

This is the 3rd incident involving COVID-19 cases reported at Vero Beach High School. It is the 17th incident to be reported at traditional schools in the county, and the 18th reported incident overall.

To date, more than 300 students and four staff members have been placed on two-week quarantines since the start of the school year.

In the latest case, Florida Department of Health identified 35 students at Vero Beach High School who came in close contact with the pupil with a positive test, according to the School District of Indian River County. School officials called the families of the students and instructed the youth to stay home and monitor their symptoms.

The student with a positive test was also told to quarantine, officials said. All Vero Beach High School families and staff members were notified of the incident.

The students will continue school through virtual learning, officials said. Custodial services continue to disinfect and sanitize all areas of the campus.
