Michael Joseph LaPorte, 80, Sebastian

Michael Joseph LaPorte, 80, of Sebastian, left this life on the evening of Sunday, Aug. 9, 2020. Mike was born July 13, 1940, to the late Bernadette “Barnie” Gervais and George LaPorte in Matheson, Ontario, Canada.

After 40 years of enduring the Canadian weather, he jumped on the opportunity to transfer his work in the construction industry to South Florida, where he would remain for the rest of his life.  He quickly found a bluegrass connection through the band Sourwood.

Hardworking, honest and always devoted to family, Mike will forever be remembered for his kind, generous, inviting and joyful personality.  He believed in the religion of happiness.  He loved to laugh and have fun.  He loved a great story.  He loved to “pick” and sing and make beautiful harmonies.  “Crazy legs” welcomed everyone in.  He was a member of the Orioles #272 and enjoyed playing there on a regular basis.  His special gifts were translated through his music and he united everyone through his passion for playing.  Always positive, he once said “ I don’t even understand sadness”.

It is certain that Mike is now “pickin”and singing in heaven with his Mom and brother Shep.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Gail (nee Milne); his loving daughter, Wendy Cooper (husband, Reg), his son Mark (Amy), his son-in-law Kenneth “Sam” Farrell (wife, Judy), and his step-children David (wife, Laura), Michael, Peter (wife, France), Lee-Ann (husband, John).  He also leaves behind five treasured grandchildren, Kenneth Farrell (Kate), Jeffrey and Adam LaPorte, Kim and Reggie Cooper; and several nieces and nephews. His fur babies Sebastian, April, Maggie and the late Bridgette will miss him greatly.

Mike was preceded in death by his first wife, Doreen (Woods); his second wife, Nancy (Allen); eldest daughter, Kimberly; brothers, Darcy and Shep; sisters, Hazel, Margorie, Doris and Dolly; and grandson, Andrew.

Mike’s wishes were to be cremated.  There will be no visitation; instead, a celebration of his life and legacy will be held at a later date.  The family respectfully requests no flowers at this time.

Arrangements are entrusted to Strunk Funeral Home, 1623 North Central Avenue, Sebastian.
