Man shot, taken to trauma center

VERO BEACH — A man in his 20’s was seriously injured after being shot in the leg early Monday, fire rescue crews said.

The shooting happened shortly before 10 a.m. Monday in the 2000 block of 11th Avenue, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said. The man was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Kofke said.

Vero Beach police are investigating the shooting. The area is two blocks north of the police department.

Police put up crime scene tape in a parking lot near a Metro by T-Mobile store, the Taj Mahal Masala Indian Restaurant and the Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy. Officers were seen talking to witnesses in the area.

There were no arrests made by Monday afternoon, police said.

Man charged in stabbing woman, requiring surgery

VERO BEACH — A 34-year-old man was jailed after a beating and stabbing that left a woman with severe injuries requiring surgery earlier this week, officers said. Police reviewed surveillance footage and described the incident as a vicious, unprovoked attack. "After speaking with medical staff, it was reported that (the victim) received treatment for four lacerations to the lower intestines, two lacerations to the colon and the removal of her spleen," Vero Beach police said in a report. Deputies investigating possible arson after brush fire fully contained

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Deputies were investigating the Sunday brush fire as a possible arson after learning two people were seen in the same wooded area moments before flames ignited. Detectives spoke with a witness and a person of interest, said Sgt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff's Office.
