Police, fire rescue to activate sirens Friday in support of healthcare workers

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Residents will see lights and hear sirens from law enforcement officials and fire rescue vehicles Friday evening for an uninterrupted 60 seconds.

But, there is no need to fret, authorities said.

The event, organized by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, aims to show support for healthcare workers on the front line treating coronavirus patients. So far, more than 80 people in the county have tested positive for COVID-19, causing two deaths, Florida Department of Health officials said.

“All law enforcement and fire rescue within our county both on and off duty will activate their lights and sirens wherever they are,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. “We encourage all of you from your homes, driveways, wherever you are to make some noise, honk your horns to let all of the healthcare workers know that we appreciate and support them.”

The sheriff’s office will begin live-streaming from its agency Facebook page at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Some deputies will be stationed at the Sebastian emergency room, South County emergency room and Hospital Row.

Deputies will begin a countdown. Then, at 7 p.m., law enforcement and first responders will turn on emergency lights and sound off sirens across the county.

If deputies get enough support, they will continue hosting the event at 7 p.m. each Friday.
