Back-to-back high temp records broken in Vero Beach

Hot weather soared this week for Vero Beach, as the city broke two daily heat records back-to-back.

Wednesday, the high temperature reached 90 degrees, beating the previous daily heat record of 89 degrees set in 2001, National Weather Service in Melbourne Meteorologist Matt Volkmer said.

Thursday saw a heat record of 91 degrees, surpassing the last highest daily temperature of 89 degrees set in 2003, Volkmer said.

“Back-to-back days of high records can happen. It’s not unusual,” Volkmer said. The city also tied a daily heat record Feb. 13.

Thursday’s record temperature is the hottest weather the city has seen so far this month. The last monthly heat record for March topped out at 93 degrees on March 20, 2003, Volkmer said.

The summer-like weather comes after Vero Beach experienced a cold front in late February. Volkmer said the city had high temperatures in the 60’s and low temperatures in the 40’s during the last three days of the month.

“Those were below average temperatures, about 10 degrees below normal,” Volkmer said. Records for National Weather Service in Melbourne date back to Nov. 1, 1942.
