UPDATE: Man arrested in double-stabbing case in Vero

VERO BEACH — The man involved in a double stabbing in Vero Beach earlier this week has been arrested, accused of being the aggressor in the domestic violence incident.

The man, identified as 61-year-old Ricky McGriff, had been airlifted to Lawnwood Regional hospital with life-threatening injuries while his partner, a 51-year-old unidentified woman, was transported by ground in serious condition.

The woman recovered enough to tell investigators that she had been battered and stabbed by McGriff prior to calling 911 on Tuesday, March 3, from the studio apartment they share in the 3100 block of US 1.

Arrest warrants were issued for McGriff, and he was arrested in St. Lucie County on Thursday. He faces charges that include attempted second degree murder, false imprisonment, violation of pretrial release – domestic violence, and felony battery – prior conviction, according to the Vero Beach Police Department.

VERO BEACH — A man and woman remain hospitalized Wednesday after being stabbed in what police described as a “domestic violence” incident.

The woman was expected to be released sometime Wednesday, Vero Beach police spokesman Master Officer Darrell Rivers said. The woman and man, who both suffered life-threatening injuries, share a studio apartment together, Rivers said.

It was unclear if any charges were expected to be filed in the case.

Rivers said the woman called 911 at 7:41 a.m. Tuesday and said she was stabbed. Officers responded to her apartment – where the stabbing happened – in the 3100 block of U.S. 1, near Mike’s Cut Rate Furniture and the Vero Motel.

When officers arrived, they found the man, who was also stabbed, Rivers said. First responders took the man and woman to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said.

The man, who appeared to have critical injuries, was flown by helicopter, officials said. The woman, who appeared to have serious injuries, was taken by ambulance.

Tuesday, officers said they were working to obtain a search warrant to inspect the apartment for evidence. Details on what was found inside the residence were not immediately available.

Rivers could not yet confirm if the man and woman stabbed each other. Rivers said the man and woman were the only two people involved in the incident.

Police continue to investigate the stabbing.
