FELLSMERE — The 70-year-old man found dead under an overturned kayak Wednesday in the C-54 canal has been identified.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) released an initial report identifying the man as Michael Fasanella, 70, of Melbourne, Fla.

Two kayakers in the area discovered the overturned kayak and found Fasanella underneath Wednesday morning. They called 911 and FWC and Indian River Fire Rescue responded shortly after 9 a.m.

According to the FWC report, Fasanella was fishing from his 10-foot Perception kayak at the time of the incident.

FWC is investigating what caused the kayak to overturn. The Medical Examiner’s Office is working to determine Fasanella’s cause of death.
