Literacy Services of Indian River County will welcome critically acclaimed author C. Morgan Babst for their Author Series event scheduled for Nov. 13 at the Windsor Beach Club. Babst’s powerful novel, “The Floating World,” was a New York Times Editor’s Pick and named a Best Book of 2017 by Amazon, Kirkus, Bustle, Southern Living and the Dallas Morning News.
Babst, a native of New Orleans, details the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in her hometown through alternating perspectives of one family devastated by the storm. Infused with the city’s soul, the novel’s narrative is structured like a spinning hurricane drawing you into its center. Kirkus Reviews called it “…deeply felt and beautifully written; a major addition to the literature of Katrina.” The Author Series event will be a captivating conversation with the authentic and talented Morgan Babst.
It promises to be a special evening to benefit Literacy Services of Indian River County. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a brief cocktail reception before Babst’s presentation. Book signing and a silent auction will follow.
Tickets are $150 per person and can be purchased online or at the Literacy Services’ office located at the Indian River County Main Library, 1600 21st Street, Vero Beach.

The mission of Literacy Services is to enable and empower local adults to become successful members of the community by improving their literacy skills. One in five adults struggle to read, which makes completing job applications, getting a driver’s license or engaging in their children’s education difficult. Literacy Services works with over 300 students annually, with 20 percent needing help with literacy and 80 percent learning English. There is a waiting list of 50 students and more tutors are needed.
The organization, a United Way supported agency, relies on over 240 volunteer tutors who provide free, confidential and one-to-one tutoring to individuals aged 16 and older or within group settings at the request of local employers. Tutors do not need prior teaching experience and receive training and resources from Literacy Services.
