Man flown to hospital after being struck by train

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An unidentified man was seriously hurt after being struck by a freight train early Wednesday, fire rescue crews said.

A Florida East Coast Railway engineer called authorities about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday after the train hit the man, Vero Beach police Lt. Matt Harrelson said. The engineer stopped the train along the railroad tracks between 16th and 12th streets, near the 1400 block of Old Dixie Highway.

The middle-aged man suffered substantial injuries to his leg, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Roger Dion said. Officers tried to stop the bleeding until emergency medical services arrived, Harrelson said.

The man was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce with serious injuries, Dion said. FEC removed the train from the area before 6 a.m., Harrelson said.

The FEC will investigate the incident.
