When deputies asked why he threw the door, George Stubbs replied, “I was getting mad and she wouldn’t leave me alone. I wanted to leave,” reports show. The woman had swelling and cuts to her lips while Stubbs did not appear to be hurt, deputies said.

The white closet door weighed about 40 to 50 pounds, reports show.

Deputies arrested Stubbs, of the 2300 block of 86th Avenue, on charges of aggravated battery and violation of probation. Stubbs was held Monday at the Indian River County Jail without bond.

Indian River County deputies responded to a disturbance about 5 p.m. Friday at Stubbs’ residence. Deputies spoke with Stubbs and the woman, who both live at the home with other family members.

Stubbs said his girlfriend began slapping him on his arms after they argued over a video game, reports show. The woman denied hitting Stubbs first.

The woman said Stubbs threw her on the bed, pinned her down and put his hands around her neck, reports show. Stubbs yelled to the woman, “What the (expletive) is wrong with you, huh?” deputies said.

Stubbs then ripped the closet door from its hinges and threw it at the woman, reports show. Deputies saw the door along with pieces that broke off lying on the floor.

Deputies arrested Stubbs and took him to the county jail. Stubbs has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 6, court records show.
