Scooter rider seriously hurt after being struck by pickup

VERO BEACH — An electric scooter driver was seriously hurt after being struck by a pickup truck Wednesday afternoon, fire rescue crews and police said.

The scooter driver, identified as a 61-year-old Vero Beach man, suffered three broken ribs and trauma to his head, Vero Beach police spokesman Officer Darrell Rivers said. The man’s name was being withheld until family members are notified.

The wreck happened about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 2100 block of 15th Avenue, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said. The driver of the 2008 silver Toyota pickup, identified as 25-year-old Alvin. B. Wiggins Jr., of Vero Beach, made a left turn from 15th Avenue onto westbound 21st Street when he struck the scooter in the crosswalk area, Rivers said.

The scooter driver was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce with serious injuries, Kofke said. Wiggins refused treatment and was issued a citation for failure to yield right of way to pedestrian at intersection, Rivers and Kofke said.

Police do not plan to charge Wiggins.

“It sounds like just an accident at this point,” Rivers said.

Vero Beach police are investigating the crash. No further details were immediately available.
