Community benefit seen in Zon’s expanded services

There are plenty of new amenities soon to be unveiled as part of expansions at Zon Beachside Assisted Living and Memory Care in Indian Harbour Beach on the former site of longtime neighborhood restaurant Doubles Beachside.

But the benefits reach out to the greater community, not just to Zon’s residents and staff. The surprising aspects of the project are the new public offerings to be highlighted at a ribbon-cutting June 20 at 4:30 p.m. and an open house June 22. There are now several programs to help the beachside elderly at large to “age in place” in their homes as long as is safely possible.

The Zon expansion will add 31 apartment-style units, a chapel, a theater and a multi-purpose room as well as high-tech medical monitoring in the rooms and other advancements such as having Alexa capabilities in the rooms.

The self-contained, 1,200-square-foot Senior Resources Center of Brevard, built as part of the expansion, is already filled with services such home health, Helping Seniors of Brevard, attorneys, case management assistance and others.

“Many who use the services will never need our facility. Sometimes they just need a little support to stay in their homes,’’ said Zon executive director Greg Kennedy.

Zon, in conjunction with Agility Physical Therapy Solutions, will provide the rehabilitative services needed for healthy aging that will include physical, occupational and speech therapies. These services are offered to the residents of Zon as well as the local communities, said Physical Therapist Dr. Mark Brimer, who serves on the Satellite Beach City Council. Safety and fall prevention training also will be offered.

“The ultimate goal of the programs and services at Zon is to offer the beachside communities, residents, caregivers and physicians the tools to maximize healthy and safe senior living,’’ he said. Other aspects of the two-story, nearly-30,000-square-foot expansion design is a glass-walled conservatory for Zon residents to be able to look out to an internal butterfly attracting garden.

The architecture has been made dramatic from the original design in 2015 by the addition of a lighthouse-like feature on the corner closest to South Patrick Drive for a two-story chapel. Originally licensed for 100 beds when it opened in July 2016, Zon Beachside features include restaurant-style dining, a pub with a daily happy hour, a reading library, salon and spa services, routine housekeeping services, and a health and wellness center. The facility also is pet friendly.

Zon Beachside is located at 1894 South Patrick Dr., Indian Harbour Beach. The facility will be accepting new residents in July.
