Police: Gunfire reports that caused school lock down unfounded

Update: Police said that initial reports of gunfire near an elementary school were unfounded.

Lt. John Pedersen said a resident who lives down the street from Rosewood Magnet School called police about 1 p.m. after the resident thought they heard a “popping” sound. Officers responded to the area and notified Rosewood school officials, who placed the campus on a 10-minute code yellow lock down.

Police searched the area, but found no shell casings, Pedersen said. A 21-year-old who also lives at the residence was found in the vicinity and arrested for an unrelated domestic battery incident, Pedersen said.

VERO BEACH — A suspect was in custody after officials at an elementary school reported hearing gunshots near the campus, prompting the school to be placed on a brief code yellow lock down.

It was unclear what prompted the gunfire. Further details on the suspect were not released Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened about 1 p.m. Tuesday near Rosewood Magnet School, 3850 16th Street, Vero Beach, School District of Indian River County spokeswoman Cristen Maddux said. School officials issued a code yellow lock down as a precaution and alerted Vero Beach police.

Maddux said the students and school were not in danger and that the suspect was never on campus. The suspect was apprehended by police a short time later.

The lock down was lifted within 10 minutes, Maddux said. For code yellow lock downs, traffic on campus is kept to a minimum and students are kept in classrooms while classes resume as normal.

Students were let out at the scheduled release time at 1:40 p.m., Maddux said. Further details on the incident were not immediately available.
