Video, photos – GYAC opens new education wing

The Gifford Youth Achievement Center officially unveiled its new education wing during a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon, attracting more than 100 spectators, including community leaders.

The 14,000 square foot building has eight multi-use classrooms, a computer lab, teen meeting room and an additional office space, officials said. The facility, located next door to the main building, was titled Cis and Bill Glavin Educational Center.

The new building was needed to accommodate space for about 60 students usually placed on the waiting list each year to attend classes at the main building, 4875 43rd Avenue, officials said.

The property was named after Bill Glavin, vice-chairman of the GYAC Foundation Board of Trustees, officials said. The building will also have a patio area – still under construction – named after Freddie Woolfork, director of public relations and facility operations.
