Man accidentally shoots himself in face while cleaning gun, officials say

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An unidentified man was critically injured after he accidentally shot himself in the face while cleaning a hand gun Tuesday, officials said.

The incident happened about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday on the back porch of a home in the 1800 block of Easthampton Terrace, south of State Road 60, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said. The man, whose age was not available, was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce with critical injuries.

Deputies who were called to the scene did not suspect any foul play, Indian River County sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. No further details were immediately available.
