‘Stride’ and joy at Quail Valley Charities 5K walk/run

Roughly 250 people kicked up their heels last Saturday morning as participants in the Quail Valley Charities ‘Making Strides for Children’ 5K Walk/Run and Kids’ 1-Mile Fun Run.

Eager youngsters in the Kids’ Fun Run ranged in age from 4 to 12, and in the 5K ages spanned close to eight decades, ranging from 8 to 84. To encourage involvement by members of the community and of the 36 charitable organizations receiving funding, the entrance fee was a voluntary donation.

Quail Valley Charities has grown from a two-day golf tournament in 2001 to a multi-event affair that also includes a gourmet guest chef dinner, duplicate bridge, tennis and golf tournaments, a Tower Shoot at Blackwater Creek Ranch and a Girls’ Night Out shopping spree.

“We work really hard to put a new twist on it or do something new every year,” said Wanda Lincoln, Quail Valley Charities executive chair. New this year is a lecture by Gregg Swain, an expert on vintage Mahjong sets, and a Mahjong tournament. This Saturday the fundraising festivities conclude with a Grand Gala featuring auctions and sumptuous buffets.

To date, Quail Valley Charities has donated more than $5.5 million to Indian River County programs focused on children and education. Lincoln said they hope to raise roughly $500,000 to fund the grant requests.

“We hope we can do that because we like to be able to give them a big percentage of what they want.”

The overall 5K winner, Mathias Pereyra at 17:53:91, raced with several other visitors from Montevideo, Uruguay. The top female winner was Brittany Corr at 21:20.45.
