Mints or meth? Man booked after meth found in breath mint tin

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 37-year-old man was arrested last week after officers found more than 15 grams of meth inside an Altoids breath mint container in his vehicle during a traffic stop, police said.

Police arrested Steven Gregory Chalker, of the 7900 block of 94th Court, Vero Beach, on charges of trafficking meth, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Chalker was held Tuesday at the Indian River County Jail without bond.

Sebastian police conducted a traffic stop about 10:30 p.m. Dec. 29 on a Ford pickup along the 1300 block of County Road 512. Police noted the driver, identified as Chalker, had two active warrants for his arrest for violation of injunction.

Officers searched Chalker’s vehicle and found a small black and red tool bag – which had Chalker’s name written on it – in the back seat. Inside the tool bag, police found an Altoids container that contained another small bag with a white, crystal-like substance, authorities said.

The substance tested positive for methamphetamine, reports show. Police also found a small digital scale with several small white crystals inside the center console of the truck.

Chalker admitted to police the bag belonged to him, but said he was unsure of what was inside. Chalker also said he forgot about the digital scale being in his truck.

Police arrested Chalker and took him to the county jail. Chalker has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. Feb. 15, court records show.
