Girl, 3, shot in apparent case of road rage

A 3-year-old girl is in stable condition after she sustained a gunshot wound to her head during what police believe was a road rage incident over the weekend.

The child, who has not been identified, was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in West Palm Beach, initially in critical condition.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department is continuing its search for the suspect vehicle – a black sedan, possibly a BMW. The vehicle will have damage to the passenger side from having sideswiped the truck the girl was riding in.

According to police, the incident happened in the early-morning hours of Sunday, Oct. 28, in the area of SE Floresta Drive and SE Prima Vista Boulevard. At least one shot was fired in the 1000 block of SE Bywood Avenue.

The girl’s father was driving a large pickup truck at the time of the altercation with the driver of the sedan. What that altercation entailed was not immediately released to the media.

The father, who was driving home with his 3-year-old daughter and her 7-year-old sibling, told police that the other driver was possibly Hispanic or a light-skinned black male.

Authorities continue to investigate and have been reviewing surveillance footage from the area. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact Port St. Lucie Police Det. Aisha Hardison at 772-871-7324.

Those wishing to remain anonymous may call Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 800-273-8477.
