‘Engine trouble’ causes plane to make emergency landing; no injuries reported

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Two people escaped injury after a small plane made an emergency landing in west county after reporting engine trouble Thursday, officials said.

Indian River County Fire Rescue crews responded to reports of a plane in the area losing engine power about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, said Fire Rescue spokesman Cory Richter. The small plane took off from the Treasure Coast International Airport and Business Park in Fort Pierce, said Eric Menger, Executive Director for the Vero Beach Regional Airport.

The plane landed safely at the New Hibiscus Airpark airport, west of Interstate 95 and south of State Road 60. The two people on the plane were not hurt, Richter said.

The aircraft could not make it to the Vero Beach Regional Airport, Richter said.

Authorities did not name the pilot or passenger. It’s unclear if the engine on the aircraft completely failed.

Further details about the incident and the two people aboard the plane were not immediately available.
