Police: Man high off marijuana falls asleep in McDonald’s drive-thru

VERO BEACH — A 38-year-old man suspected of getting high on cannabis and then falling asleep in his vehicle in a McDonald’s drive-thru was arrested early Monday, police said.

Police arrested Darryl Fontane Chance on a charge of possession of marijuana. Chance was released Monday from the Indian River County Jail on $500 bond.

An officer responded to complaints of a suspicious vehicle about 3 a.m. Monday at McDonald’s, 1925 U.S. 1. A caller told dispatchers a green vehicle was holding up the drive-thru line at the fast-food burger restaurant.

Police arrived and noticed a green Dodge SUV stopped between both drive-thru windows, reports show. The officer approached the vehicle and saw a man, later identified as Chance, asleep in the driver’s seat.

The officer knocked on the passenger window several times and Chance woke up, reports show. Chance then unlocked the vehicle.

When the officer opened the passenger door, he immediately smelled cannabis. Chance admitted to the officer he had smoked marijuana earlier that day, authorities said.

The officer then instructed the man to move his vehicle into a nearby parking space. After Chance moved his SUV, the officer saw a plastic bag that contained marijuana fall from the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Police arrested Chance and took him to the county jail. Chance has an arraignment at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 4, court records show.
