Woman finds mother ‘severely beaten’; boyfriend charged

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 53-year-old Smyrna Beach man was arrested after a woman came home from work and found her mother ‘severely beaten’ with four broken ribs and unable to call 911, authorities and hospital staff said.

The man responsible – identified as Mack David Ivey – had argued with the woman before beating her, reports show. Hospital staff said the woman underwent surgery because of other injuries, including a collapsed lung, a broken humerus and facial bruises.

Indian River County sheriff’s deputies arrested Ivey on a charge of aggravated battery. Ivey is being held at the Indian River County Jail on $50,000 bond.

Deputies responded to a disturbance about 4:30 p.m. July 15 on 133rd Place in Sebastian. Deputies spoke with the victim, who said she and Ivey – her boyfriend – got into an argument at a restaurant earlier in the day.

The victim said Ivey left her at the restaurant, so she decided to walk home. Ivey drove up to the victim while she was walking and demanded she get in the vehicle, but the victim refused.

A witness told deputies Ivey threatened to kill the victim. When the victim arrived home, Ivey beat her for two hours because he thought she called law enforcement, leaving the woman lying on the couch and unable to move, reports show.

Deputies spoke with the victim’s daughter, who said she came home and met Ivey at the front door.

Ivey tried to stop the daughter from going inside. He told the daughter that “she didn’t want to see what happened,” reports show.

The daughter then heard her mother screaming. The daughter went inside and found the victim with serious injuries, authorities said.

When the daughter called 911, Ivey fled the scene, reports show. The victim was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

Deputies arrested Ivey and took him to the county jail. Ivey has an arraignment at 8:30 a.m. August 29, court records show.
