Dozens arrested over Memorial Day weekend in ‘great team effort’

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – More than two dozen arrests were logged over Memorial Day Weekend throughout Indian River County.

Authorities from several jurisdictions made arrests on a number of charges including traffic, drugs, and driving impaired. In all, 263 traffic stops were made and more than 150 citations were issued.

“In conjunction with our partners from the Florida Highway Patrol, Indian River Shores, Sebastian and Fellsmere Police Departments, we conducted a DUI detail throughout our county over Memorial Day Weekend,” Sheriff Deryl Loar said. “Totaling more than 25 arrests, we were able to not only take those who were driving under the influence off of our roads, but also arrest others on outstanding warrants. This was a great team effort.”

Deputies working the DUI detail also located a wanted subject, Benjamin Carter,  44, who was found in possession of crack cocaine, marijuana, unidentified pills, and $1,370 in suspected drug money, authorities said.

Carter was wanted on outstanding charges of battery domestic violence, assaulting a law enforcement officer, resisting with violence, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of cocaine, controlled substances, and drug paraphernalia.

Carter is being held at the Indian River County Jail without bond.
