Fire officials investigate small blaze in boys bathroom at Vero high

VERO BEACH — Fire crews continue to investigate a small bathroom blaze that caused several students to temporarily evacuate from a high school, authorities said.

This is the first incident involving an active fire at a campus within the School District this year, School District spokeswoman Cristen McMillan said.

Indian River County Fire Rescue, Vero Beach police and Sheriff’s deputies responded to the blaze Monday morning at Vero Beach High School, 1707 16th Street. The fire ignited inside the downstairs boys bathroom in building 2.

Students inside building 2 were evacuated; it’s unknown how many left the campus, McMillan said.

The fire was contained to the bathroom and was out before Indian River County Fire Rescue crews arrived, spokesman Cory Richter said. Whether the blaze died down on its own or if school officials helped to put it out was not available.

No injuries were reported, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Soon after, fire rescue crews cleared the scene and students who evacuated were placed in other classrooms at the high school, McMillan said. All rooms inside building 2 are being used except for four that were closest to the bathroom where flames erupted.

Further details on the fire and what caused it were not immediately available. Parents with questions should contact the school for further information.

An estimate on damages to the bathroom were not immediately available.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating what caused the blaze, Richter said.
