Commissioners remove ‘Interim’ from County Attorney’s title

With just less than two months under her belt as the interim Brevard County attorney, Eden Bentley last week was promoted to the permanent post.

Commissioners were scheduled to help Human Resources Director Jerry Visco draw up criteria for seeking applicants to replace former County Attorney Scott Knox, who retired last month.

But instead, they voted 3-2 on Commissioner Curt Smith’s motion to give the job to Bentley, who logs 32 years in the County Attorney’s Office. She won’t get a raise with the promotion, however, as her yearly salary has been $180,952 since being named interim. All commissioners echoed Smith’s praise of Bentley’s legal acumen. But only Chairwoman Rita Pritchett and Commissioner Jim Barfield supported Smith with their votes. Commissioners John Tobia and Kristine Isnardi said they wanted to look at a pool of other would-be county attorneys before choosing anyone.
