Two fatal crashes cause heavy traffic in west county

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Two fatal crashes, including one involving a bicyclist, caused heavy traffic on County Road 512 late Tuesday in the western part of the county, authorities said.

A man riding a bicycle was struck and killed by a vehicle about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on County Road 512, said Fellsmere police Chief Keith Touchberry. The crash was just half a block east of Broadway Street.

The crash is an active homicide investigation and will be turned over to the Florida Highway Patrol, Touchberry said. Indian River County deputies also were on scene.

Police shut down County Road 512 between Broadway and Pine streets, Touchberry said. Eastbound traffic on the street is being diverted north. Motorists will be able to get back on the Interstate at Malabar Road in Brevard County, police said.

County Road 512 was already heavy because of another fatal crash that happened on Interstate 95 at State Road 60, police said. Deputies tweeted that I-95 northbound was closed just south of the Vero Beach exit.

Traffic from that crash is being diverted to Indrio Road in St. Lucie County, deputies said. Motorists should avoid the area and use different routes if possible.

Further details on both crashes were not immediately available.
