A 67-year-old bicyclist who died in a hit-and-run crash Monday in Martin County was identified as Steven C. Nichols, of Vero Beach, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash comes just four days after another bicyclist was struck and killed at the base of the Merrill Barber Bridge in Indian River County.

Troopers said an unknown vehicle was traveling northbound about 8 p.m. Monday on Northwest Green River Parkway, just south of Jensen Beach Boulevard. Nichols was traveling northbound on a bicycle in the inside lane on the shoulder.

The unknown vehicle struck Nichols and left the area. Nichols was pronounced dead at the scene, said FHP spokesman Alvaro Feola.

Nichols was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was not under the influence of alcohol, according to an FHP report.
