Toddler’s death ruled accidental drowning

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Deputies determined that a child who was found unconscious in a pool died from an accidental drowning at a home, according to a news release.

Deputies and personnel from the emergency services department went to the residence at 6:15 p.m. Monday in the 1400 block of 48th Avenue. They were responding to a call of a 2-year-old found unconscious in a pool.

Public Safety Dispatch officials gave CPR instructions over the phone to the family, deputies said. Upon arrival, deputies continued to attempt to resuscitate the child until emergency medical services officials got there and took over.

The attempt to revive the 2-year-old remained in progress as the child was taken to the Indian River Medical Center. But, the child was pronounced dead by doctors at the hospital later that night.

“Our community mourns today as we see incidents like this far too often. Water and pool safety is always a concern in our community for children, the elderly, and those with special needs,” Sheriff Deryl Loar said. “Water hazards can become deadly in seconds, just as this incident shows.”
