Controlled burn set for Friday in north Indian River

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Residents may smell smoke in the air Friday because of a controlled burn, Florida Forest Service officials said.

Forest Service crews issued a controlled burn permit for a 20 by 30 pile of brush from 11 a.m. to 4:36 p.m Friday. The agricultural area is located near Willow Street and 81st Street, just south of Fellsmere and north of the Sand Lakes Restoration Area, officials said.

Controlled burns help prevent wildfires and fire is a tool for managing the land, officials said. Dead vegetation can be an accelerant for fires.
