SEBASTIAN — A 31-year-old woman died after a fiery crash late Thursday on U.S. 1, police said.

Officers got several 911 calls about 6 p.m. Thursday in response to a single vehicle crash in the 700 block of U.S. 1, police spokesman Commander John Blackledge said.

Police said a woman who was driving a 2009 white Kia four-door Sedan crashed head-on into a wooden power pole. A citizen arrived at the crash scene shortly after and pulled the woman out of the vehicle as the engine caught fire, Blacklegde said.

Upon arrival, officers found a woman lying on the ground near the vehicle, which was engulfed in flames.

Officers extinguished the fire. The woman, identified as Kaitlyn M. Regan of Vero Beach, was taken to the Sebastian River Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 6:37 p.m. by staff, Blackledge said.

The vehicle the woman was driving was towed to the police department evidence compound. The cause of the crash is unknown and police continue to investigate.

No further information was available.
