Thomas Joseph Dooley, 82, Vero Beach

Thomas Joseph Dooley, 82, died Dec. 13, 2017, at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach.

He was born Dec. 11, 1935, in Boston, Mass., and lived in Vero Beach for the past 40 years.

Tom received his Masters Degree from Boston College.

He retired as a Lt. Colonel from the US Air Force after 25 years. After retirement he served as Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Business and Financial Affairs for Indian River County.

Tom was a Founding member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, a charter member of the Holy Cross Council of Knights of Columbus, a member of the Indian River Chapter of M.O.A.A. and the Rotary Club of Vero Beach.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Katherine Bennett Dooley; daughters, Mary Ellen Cowhey (Jeffrey), of Pennington, N.J. and Vero Beach, and Ann Marie Bridges, of Orlando; grandchildren, William, Jeffrey, Bennett, and Michael; and brother, Brian Dooley, of Dallas.

He was preceded in death by his brother Kevin Dooley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960 in Tom’s memory.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. on Tuesday Dec. 19, 2017 Holy Cross Catholic Church, Vero Beach.

Blue will be the uniform of the day, wear your blue, any shade will do.

Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

 

 

Shirley Brewer Sherman, 92, Vero Beach

Shirley Brewer Sherman, 92, of Vero Beach, died Dec. 12, 2017.

She was born in Trewince Villa, Grampound Road, Laddock R.D., in Cornwall, England, and lived in Vero Beach, coming from Miami.

She was a WREN during WWII with HMS Raleigh at Torpoint Navy Base and served England as a secretary/typist to provide pay to sailors.

Before and after war, she worked in Torquay as clerk, shorthand typist, and secretary at Prince of Wales Hospital, Imperial Hotel, Torbay Motors, and J.F. Rockheys Department Store.

In Florida, Shirley held many jobs and positions and finished her work career as a Certified Nurse Assistant.

Shirley was a Born Again Christian and a member of Christ Church of Vero Beach, and had previously belonged to First Church of God, and many other churches.

She was involved with the Vero Beach Theatre Guild, Episcopal Choir, Elderberry’s, Prayer Group, Walking Group, and Meals Ministry.

Her education began at the County School at St Austell, Cornwall; Headland College, Plymouth; and Warrens Business and Commercial College, Plymouth, Devon, England.

In Florida, she attended Charron Williams College Orlando, Business; Florida Hospital Orlando, LPN program; Orange County Vocational School, Medical Secretary; and Indian River County School District-Certified Nursing Assistant program.

Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth Sherman; sons, Andrew Sherman and Roger Sherman; granddaughter, Kathryn Sherman; grandson, Christopher Sherman; and many cousins, nieces and nephews in England and beyond.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Reginald John Brewer and Elsie Tremayne Brewer (formerly Jewell); sister, Jeanette Gomn; brothers, Victor Brewer and Geoffrey Brewer; and many cousins, aunts and uncles.

Shirley was completely devoted to her children.

She was a consummate cook, thrifty shopper, loved her pets, supported her friends, community and church.

She traveled to many places and events to include her home country of England, trips with her sister to San Francisco, and a church group tour of Canadian Rockies, trip with cousin to Panama, volunteer outreach with Appalachian Children’s Project in Kentucky, camping trips around the Carolina’s, and her honeymoon trip to Nassau, Bahamas.

A Memorial Service is planned for a date in the future.
