Storms pass through Indian River

Storms expected for the weekend

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Strong thunderstorms are passing through the county on Saturday.

A lightning alert was issued around 8 a.m. and a wind chill advisory will remain in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

A wind chill advisory means that cold air and the wind will combine to create low wind chills, forecasters said. Wind chills in the early morning will be between 30 and 35 degrees.

Residents are reminded to dress appropriately for the weather.

There will be a 90 percent chance of rain throughout most of Saturday. A line of strong to severe storms are possible as a strong cold front moves through central Florida.

The main threats from the cold front are damaging winds, isolated tornadoes and heavy rainfall. Residents should make sure they have a method of receiving severe weather alerts.

Temperatures will fall to 58 degrees by 5 p.m., weather meteorologists said. Ten to 15 mph southwest winds will become west northwest winds in the afternoon.

The Source, a local Christian outreach ministry, will open a cold weather shelter for the homeless and needy Saturday and Sunday. The shelter, located at 1015 Commerce Avenue, will be open from 9 p.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Sunday and from 9 p.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. Monday, emergency service officials said.
