Leadership Circle squarely in nonprofits’ corner

Ned and Emily Sherwood welcomed John’s Island Foundation Leadership Circle donors to their magnificent Gem Island home last Wednesday evening, for a cocktail reception sponsored by Northern Trust to celebrate their philanthropic efforts on behalf of the community.

Comprised of roughly 50 couples and several individuals, the Leadership Circle represents about 10 percent of foundation donors, but 46.5 percent of the total amount raised.

Last year the John’s Island Foundation raised $746,400 and granted $869,000, some from escrowed grants, to 23 Indian River County nonprofit agencies. Heading into its 19th year, the foundation has granted more than $9.9 million toward nonprofits’ long-term capital expenses, such as roofs, air conditioners, computers, vehicles, furniture and equipment.

“A couple of people have come up and said to me tonight that the foundation does such a good job accomplishing its mission,” said Ken Wessel, JIF board president.  “John’s Island is blessed with members who really want to help other people.”
