INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A woman who escaped from a patrol car while wearing leg shackles and hand restraints after an arrest was detained shortly after the incident, Indian River County deputies said.

Jennifer Daianna Day, 26, of Hollywood, Fla., was charged with escape or attempted escape, two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with and without violence and loitering or prowling. She is being held at the Indian River County Jail on $6,000 bond.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Oct. 21, a deputy was driving northbound on Old Dixie Highway when he saw a woman standing in the grass in front of the Live Oak Animal Hospital, 890 Old Dixie Highway. Before the deputy got out of his patrol car, the woman began pacing around and turned to hide her identity, deputies said.

When the deputy got out of the car, the woman, later identified as Day, began walking away from the deputy toward U.S. 1. Day was acting “in a manner that a law abiding individual would not normally be,” deputies said.

The deputy told Day to stop and turn around, but Day kept walking.

The deputy then walked in front of Day and she began to scream that the deputy “was going to kill her,” deputies said.

The deputy grabbed Day’s arm as her hand had clenched shut, creating a closed fist. Another deputy arrived at the scene and grabbed Day’s other arm as she kept pulling away.

Day’s body became stiff as deputies continued to give her verbal commands to place her hands behind her back. Day was then “escorted to the ground” by deputies, where she continued to resist arrest.

Then, Day began kicking her legs toward the face of one deputy. Day then reached toward that deputy’s genital area and, after she reached them, began to squeeze, deputies said.

The deputy readjusted his body and held Day down until a detective arrived on scene. When the detective arrived, Day was placed in handcuffs and taken to the patrol car.

Day kicked one deputy in his chest as the deputies put her in the back of the car. When the patrol car reached the county jail, Day, still wearing hand restraints and leg shackles, escaped from the rear passenger door on the driver’s side and ran north on 41st Avenue, deputies said.

Day was detained a short distance from the patrol car by deputies and taken to the county jail for booking. She was due in mental health court on Tuesday, where judge Cynthia Cox ordered to have Day’s mental health condition examined by a mental health professional, court records show.

No further details on the arrest were immediately available.
