Theodore A. Dunn, Sr., 84, Vero Beach
Theodore A. “Ted” Dunn, Sr., 84, of Vero Beach, died Oct. 20, 2017. He was born in South Bend, Ind., to George D. Dunn, Sr. and Cecilia F. Dunn, and had been a resident of Vero Beach since 1969, when he and his wife, Mary J. (Mim) Dunn, moved their family to a place they saw as paradise.
He was a retired physical education teacher and coach and had served in the United States Army.
Ted was a graduate of Purdue University, earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree, and was a scholarship athlete on the Boilermaker’s basketball team. Ted had a passion for coaching and instructing physical education to young people, and did so at all levels of the K-12 public school system, including those with special needs.
His greatest love though was coaching and guiding his five children into adult life and sports, and did so through countless hours of mentoring, instruction, and road trips. In his spare time Ted loved to play tennis and golf.
Ted is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mim; five children, Michele Falls (Monte), Georgia Tyson (Bruddy), Glenn Dunn (Kelly), and Kirk Dunn (Barbara), all of Vero Beach, and Theodore A. (Tony) Dunn, Jr. (Michele), of Gainesville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; brother, George Dunn, Jr. (Carolyn); and sister, Mary Dischinger (Terry).
Ted loved life and family, and always believed himself to be the luckiest man alive. His family believes they too were the luckiest persons alive to have been part of his life. He will be lovingly missed.

Carolyn R. Hartwig, 70, Vero Beach
Carolyn R. Hartwig, 70, of Vero Beach, passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 22, 2017.
Carolyn graduated from Oxford Academy and Central High School in Oxford, N.Y. She attended Texas Southern University and received a Master’s degree in Gerontology from St. John Fischer College in Rochester, N.Y.
Prior to her retirement, Carolyn was Coordinator of Assisted Living at the Village at Park Ridge in Rochester, N.Y., for 15 years, Administrator of Assisted Living at The Highlands at Pittsford, N.Y., for 5 years, and the Executive Director for Alterra Healthcare in Vero Beach, for five years.
Throughout her life she was a staunch advocate for senior rights and active in the Greater Partnership for the Elderly in Rochester, N.Y., serving on the Board of Directors.
Carolyn’s greatest pleasures in life were her family and helping seniors.
She is survived by her loving husband, John D. Hartwig, Jr.; her beloved dog, Baxter; as well as her children, John T. Hartwig, of Rochester, N.Y., and his fiancée, Gretchen VanGeison Schicker; her daughter, Jennifer Howarth, and son-in-law, Christian Howarth; and her son, Thomas Hartwig. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Keith Dobles (26), Alexis Hartwig (19), Ethan Hartwig (16), Jacob Howarth (6), Dylan Howarth (4); and her step granddaughter, Ashley Mroczek (24); as well her great-grandchildren, Olivia (11), Payton (9), Tyler (6), Colin (4), and Weston age (2).
A Celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held on Oct. 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home, at 1655 27th St., Vero Beach.

Augustine Whelan, 75 Roseland
Augustine “Auggie” Whelan, 75, of Roseland, passed away on Oct. 23, 2017, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Prior to his retirement to Florida in 1999 he was a 911 communications operator for the City of Sea Isle Police Department.
He was an Army veteran serving from 1962 to 1965 stationed in Mainz, Germany, and also operated a service station on Sea Isle.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Rosemarie Whelan; children, Daniel Whelan and Rose Whelan Silipena; four precious grandchildren, Alyssa Whelan, Jason Silipena, Arianna Silipena and Autumn Turner; one brother, Patrick Whelan; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Augustine and Elizabeth Whelan; granddaughter, Shana Renee Whelan; and brother, James A. Whelan.
Family and friends will honor and celebrate Auggie’s life by gathering for a Viewing at Seawinds Funeral Home, 735 S. Fleming Street, Sebastian, on Monday, Oct. 30, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 13075 U.S. 1, Sebastian. Burial will follow at Sebastian Municipal Cemetery, 1921 N. Central Ave., Sebastian, with full military honors.
