Deputies catch two would-be car burglars

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Two teenagers that were trying to break into cars were captured by deputies on Saturday, Indian River County deputies said.

The teens, 15 and 16, of Vero Beach, were given auto burglary charges. One of teens faces an additional charge of burglary of an occupied structure.

Details on whether the teens are being held at the Indian River County Jail or the St. Lucie Regional Juvenile Detention Center were not available.

Deputies went to the scene shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday in the 1900 block of 23rd Place Southwest. A woman had called deputies and told them two teens were pulling on door handles in the area trying to enter vehicles.

A deputy who arrived spotted the teens that matched the woman’s description standing in a front yard. When the teens saw the deputy, they fled southbound.

A sheriff’s helicopter helped K-9 units find the teens, who were hiding in a nearby wooded area.

Burglary Suspects Apprehended

On 10/21 the Sheriff's Office apprehended two burglary suspects who were reportedly attempting to break into cars. Attached is some video taken from the Sheriff's Office helicopter.

Deputies later discovered the teens earlier had went into an enclosed trailer in the area and stole an Echo Chainsaw and a gas can. One teen took the chainsaw while the other took the gas can.

When the teens ran from deputies, they hid the two items in the woods, deputies said. In several other burglaries, one of the teens acted as a lookout while the other committed the thefts.

In another incident, deputies said the first teen went into the cab of a GMC dump truck in the 1700 block of 23rd Place Southwest and stole a bag with two Milwaukee drills.

Also, during a third incident, the first teen went into an open garage in the 1800 block of 24th Street Southwest and stole an iPhone and change.

During a fourth incident, the first teen went into an open garage in the 2100 block of 16th Avenue Southwest and stole a fishing rod and reel.

The garages are attached to homes and were occupied at the time of the burglary, deputies said. The second teen acted as a lookout in the thefts and all the stolen items were stored at his home.
